Markus Schmitz utilizes a technique called the paper cut-out. His works are based on complex drawings that he processes with a cutter knife. After making a rough drawing with a black felt-tip pen on thick white paper, depicting figures, objects ot landscapes, he then begins the process of deconstructing these images. By using a cutter knife he randomly cuts pieces out of the paper, not necessarily following the outlines of his original drawing. By trimming figures with beautiful, fragile patterns, he creates new abstract and figurative motifs. For his artistic interventions Schmitz also uses advertising brochures and magazines. Born in Cologne in 1980, Markus Schmitz lives and works in Frankfurt am Main
