AUFTUNEN UND PEPPEN

Solo show with works by Markus Schmitz

The opening exhibition of the Goldstein exhibition series 2026 is “Auftunen und Peppen” featuring works by artist Markus Schmitz. We warmly invite you to the opening at Goldstein Gallery on Friday, January 31 at 7 pm.

The drawings of Atelier Goldstein artist Markus Schmitz are marked by a complex and imaginative visual language of lines. In their clear yet ornamental structure, they recall stained-glass windows or the strong contours of medieval woodcuts. Lines and text, executed in a distinctive, self-developed typography, condense into visual nodes.

Within the interwoven drawings, motifs such as people, landscapes, vehicles, and organic forms emerge. The lines generate a tension between control and impulse, between deliberate composition and intuitive flow. This playful process of reworking, adding, and rethinking – a constant tuning up and pepping up of the motifs – forms the starting point for the exhibition title.

Many of the drawings serve as the basis for cut-outs. Here, Markus Schmitz works with the paper-cutting technique (Scherenschnitt), which he has developed into a contemporary mode of expression. Through a kind of two-stage process of abstraction, precise paper works are created in which the negative cut-out areas render the motif or narrative only as a trace. The shadows cast by the works in space are an integral part of the composition, extending the picture plane into the surrounding environment. This creates a dynamic interplay between what is visible and what is merely suggested, generating depth without settling on a single, definitive interpretation.
