Moving Boxes

Die Zukunftsstadt
Stefan Häfner
Villa of the Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden e.V.

The historic villa of the Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden has been transformed into the stage for the participatory exhibition project “Moving Boxes” since November 29, 2024, where the theme of housing is explored together with artists, audiences, and other participants.

As part of this initiative, we are delighted to feature artist Stefan Häfner: From December 19 to 22, 2024, and January 2 to 5, 2025, his City of the Future will be on display in the historic villa. Until 2010, Häfner planned and developed this artwork as a model architecture for a better life in the future, where spatial challenges could be addressed more intelligently and consistently. The model, made from folded and glued white cardboard, is fully equipped even in its inaccessible interior. Every detail reflects the long-term process of self-generating growth, visible in all aspects. Häfner’s conceptual yet experimental approach to the urban planning necessity of providing well-organized living spaces for many people remains highly relevant today.

Since its completion in 2010, the City of the Future has been prominently exhibited and has been part of the collection of the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) in Frankfurt am Main for several years.
