On Friday, July 25, the solo exhibition “Die Grellung” opens with works by the artist Selbermann. For many years, Selbermann has been working on an ongoing autobiographical project: in a kind of visual stream-of-consciousness diary, every place, landscape, and building he visits — as well as every person he meets — finds a place. Through drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs, and a growing collection of souvenirs, these memories and encounters are condensed into a complex artistic body of work.
The exhibition focuses on towers: the higher a building rises above its surroundings, the more significant the memory it leaves for the artist. Multi-sided cardboard panels become multidimensional sculptures, and audio recordings of the artist’s personal stories transform into a journey in sound.
Selbermann’s language is infused with poetic constructs, coining terms such as the exhibition title “Die Grellung” — a reference to city towers shimmering in the blinding light of the sun.
