In his graduation exhibition, Juewen Zhang continues the artistic exploration of the streetwear brand Vans that he began during his studies. He transforms the exhibition space into a walk-in Vans store, whose interior and products are rendered in large-scale charcoal drawings. Measuring up to 3.50 meters in length, these works are created through the interplay of layers of charcoal and areas of light carved out using an eraser. Sculptural elements – such as paper Vans shoes and a replica sales counter – extend the drawings into the surrounding space. The installation raises questions regarding the aesthetics of consumerism and brand identity.
