NO33 4 Zines

Publikationen und Ausstellung
Perihan Arpacilar, Snezana Milenkovic, Franz von Saalfeld, Juewen Zhang
Goldstein Galerie, Frankfurt am Main

30 September – 3 November 2018

Curated by Jakob Hoffmann
Published by Nieves

The Zurich-based Nieves Verlag has been publishing artist books and zines since 2010. Through the method of selection and simple production, publishing director Benjamin Sommerhalder enables a maximally independent publishing programme, which includes both unknown and well-known artists (Tal R., Elizabeth Peyton, Miranda July, Stefan Marx, KerenCytter, etc.). Between 15 and 20 issues are published annually, which are quickly sold out as collectors’ items.

Zines are mostly self-made by artists and fans, experimental in content and concentrated on one subject. The production is uncomplicated, the print run is small. In the environment of artist groups and art schools, zines are a frequently used form of self-publishing, i.e. the independent publication of one’s own works.
From 29 September, booklets by four artists from Atelier Goldstein will be presented in a space-related installation, which will be published by Nieves.

The 4 Zines by Perihan Arpacilar, Snezana Milenkovic, Franz von Saalfeld and Juewen Zhang are, like the majority of Nieves publications, to be understood as artist’s booklets and will each be published in a limited edition of 100 copies.
The exhibition architecture of the Goldstein Gallery, which is being realized by the Frankfurt artist Lutz Pillong, also follows this special publishing concept. It exposes the zines as objects and invites visitors to linger and read over 50 selected publications by the publishing house.

The cooperation between Atelier Goldstein and Nieves Verlag was initiated and realized by the Frankfurt curator Jakob Hoffmann, who is a regular guest at the Goldstein Gallerie with his event series These Foolish Things.
He is familiar with the diverse artistic production of Atelier Goldstein and invited four artists to realize 4 new zines together with Benjamin Sommerhalder.
