ca tourne

The potter stands at her wheel and throws a vessel.1
The little diver at her side is blown away, climbs into the vessel and sails by cliffs and coves to the open sea. She would so like to discover a shipwreck and bring back a disc of precious celadon for her sister, the potter, an almost impossible undertaking.

In the meantime, the potter’s wheel turns round and round – counterclockwise – and the dexterous potter throws one pitcher, orb, vase and turret after another.

Towards evening, the little diver returns, and tired, climbs into the largest vase and falls asleep, while up in the heavens, Saturn, also known as Cronus or Father Time, circles the sky. In his English and French incarnation, Saturn, the melancholic, carries “the ultimate vessel”. A riddle.

1 Without the English language, this story makes no sense. A vessel is a cup, a bowl or a pitcher, as well as a craft for travelling on water.
2 “the ultimate vessel” He who solves the riddle wins a vase…
