NO11 RÉMY PIERLOT – THE INGENIOS DON QUICHOTTE Curated by Pierre Muylle
Exhibtion: October 9th – November 8th 2014 Opening: October 8th 2014, 7 pm
Pierre Muylle is the director of the „Mad Musee” in the Belgian city of Liege, a museum devoted to the work of disabled artists. A collection of over 2500 pieces of art, a documentation centre as well as an international exhibition programme make it one of the best contemporary art museums in Belgium. Atelier Goldstein has exhibited the work of its artists at this museum on several occasions for the past few years. Now Atelier Goldstein finally has the opportunity to invite Pierre Muylle to curate an exhibition at its gallery. He has decided to introduce Remy Pierlot from the La S Grand Atelier in Vielsalm in Belgium, an artists’ collective that works much in the same way as Atelier Goldstein.
Pierlot’s working methods are traditional. He sketches and paints water colours of landscapes, old castles and seascapes and whittles figures from wood. For the pieces in the exhibition “ The Ingenious Don Quichote”, however, he uses the monotype printing method which produces only single prints. He uses films by Hitchcock, Godard, Orson Welles and Chris Marker as a template, films that he had seen with guest artist Olivier Deprez and his artist colleague Adolpho Avril, who helped inspire his magnificent graphic homage to Don Quijote, which now consists of 270 pictures.
This oeuvre was also the basis for a book published in cooperation with the authors’ collective “Fremoc”, a publishing house in Brussels specializing in graphic novels. In an event dubbed “Knock Out”, Fremoc publisher Thierry van Hasselt will install a pop-up book shop at Galerie Goldstein on October 12-14 , where he will speak about his collaboration with La S Grand Atelier at a Sunday matinee event scheduled for 11 am. On October 22, meanwhile, Frankfurt-based film maker Michel Kloefkorn and curator Jakob Hoffmann will come together to discuss the cinematic references in Remy Pierlot’s body of work. On November 7, Pierlot himself will discuss his work with Anne Francoise Rouche – the director of La S Grand Atelier – and Pierre Muylle.
