Hufe. Tatzen. Zehengänger.

Lothar Zaubitzer
Goldstein Galerie, Frankfurt a.M.

August 1 – September 5, 2026

We warmly invite you to the opening of Lothar Zaubitzer‘s solo exhibition “Hufe. Tatzen. Zehengänger.“ [Hooves. Paws. Digitigrades.] at Goldstein Galerie on Friday, July 31 at 7 pm.

For many years, Lothar Zaubitzer’s sculptural practice, primarily in ceramics, has focused on the bodies of animals. Working exclusively from photographs Zaubitzer creates three-dimensional figures—highly detailed creatures carefully shaped in clay.

The exhibition focuses on his most recent body of work, in which he turns his attention to the feet of animals – a part of the body that has rarely been the subject of artistic inquiry. Over the course of two years, he created more than thirty meticulously crafted fragments: animal feet that at first glance resemble studies from nature. On closer inspection, however, Zaubitzer’s imagination and subtle sense of humor come into play. These works shift the boundary toward the surreal, inviting viewers to experience the tension between nature and transformation, cuteness and monstrosity, seriousnessA and wit.

Despite depicting a wide variety of species, the feet are all presented at the same scale and without differences in color. Fired in unglazed clay, each work is based on one of three fundamental forms – hoof, paw, or digitigrade foot. Arranged in a winding sequence stretching approximately ten meters through the gallery, the ceramic animal feet will move through the exhibition space like a procession of creatures from 31 July onwards.
