On Friday, September 26, the solo exhibition “Alle sollen schweigen” [Everyone Must Be Silent] opens, featuring works by artist Tina Herchenröther. As a young artist, Tina Herchenröther addresses the experiences and desires of her generation, while at the same time developing a contemporary iconography in which she explores themes such as diversity, gender roles, gestures of strength, and bodily autonomy.
At the same time, Herchenröther’s paintings open up a second narrative level through color—although the color application naturally follows the drawing, the raw fields of color take on a life of their own beyond the visual storyline: body parts, hair, skin, clothing, and everyday objects shine out at the viewer in rich, vibrant hues.
It is the conscious rejection of naturalistic representation in both form and color that allows the motifs to stand out against a predominantly white background—open to ambiguity, free from normative labels and body ideals. With this, Tina Herchenröther deliberately and playfully explores the boundaries between drawing and painting.
