Sottobosco

Franz von Saalfeld
Museum Dr. Guislain, Ghent

October 24, 2026 – February 14, 2027

The Belgian art and cultural centre Wit.h initiated the project Sottobosco. As part of this art project, the artists Franz von Saalfeld and Klaas Rommelaere are engaged in a multi-year collaboration. In June 2024, the Belgian artist Klaas Rommelaere travelled to Atelier Goldstein in Frankfurt for a residency. In November, Franz von Saalfeld followed as a guest of Wit.h in Kortrijk, Belgium, to continue the collaboration with Klaas Rommelaere.

Together, the two artists are working on a large-scale artwork. Franz von Saalfeld created a large-scale drawing on textile, which Klaas Rommelaere is now further developing. In doing so, Rommelaere combines traditional knitting techniques with contemporary influences. The collaborative work will be presented at the conclusion of their collaboration as part of the exhibition Sottobosco at Museum Dr. Guislain in Ghent.

Sottobosco is a metaphor for the importance of organisms that thrive in the shadows. The forest floor is less visibly present in the forest than the large tree, but it’s equally valuable and at least as important. The forest floor provides a healthy foundation with great biodiversity. We shift our attention from the large trees, which capture all the attention, to the equally rich growth beneath them.
