As a young artist at Atelier Goldstein, Tina Herchenröther explores the experiences and longings of her generation, developing a contemporary iconography that addresses themes such as diversity, the negotiation of gender roles, gestures of strength, and bodily autonomy. At the same time, Herchenröther opens up a second narrative level through color in her paintings. While the color scheme naturally follows the drawing, the raw fields of color take on a life of their own beyond the visual narrative: body parts, hair, skin, clothing, and everyday objects radiate toward the viewer in a lush palette.
It is the conscious departure from naturalistic form and color that makes the motifs stand out against predominantly white backgrounds—open to ambiguity, detached from normative attributions and body ideals. Herchenröther deliberately and playfully explores the boundaries between drawing and painting. Her figures, often inspired by media or pop culture imagery, undergo a consistent transformation in their transfer to paper or canvas through drawing and painting.
Herchenröther’s fearless use of material and technique allows each image space for the unexpected and intuitive. In doing so, identities and characteristics are renegotiated—through exaggeration, displacement, and reinterpretation. Works such as “Blutende Torte” or “Handkuchen” already express a certain intensity in their titles—an intensity that feels almost physical. They stand for moments of risk-taking, questioning norms, and the joyful testing of boundaries.
A first monographic publication on Tina Herchenröther’s work will be released at the opening as part of the Atelier Hefte series, supported by the Hessian Cultural Foundation
