Andreas Skorupa

Andreas Skorupa joined atelier Goldstein in the summer of 2005. He began working from a book of Russian Icons, developing detailed drawings /images , his own very individual interpretations of the iconography of saints, he works onto large scale canvas or onto wood. He carefully studies the image from the book and then picks out the important details for his own work, the faces, hands and feet, he enhances details in the fabric – he works directly onto canvas or paper with a black marker pen and then works with acrylic colour working layer for layer, building the depth of colour and at the same time an added patina, sometimes adding gold leaf . The interpreted composition is always perfectly composed, the eyes looking upwards , they are instantly recognized as icons but at the same time they are a very personalized iconography of Skorupas world.
